Recovery of Otherness in a High-Functioning Autistic Learner Through Second Language Tutorial Sessions

The purpose of this research is to visualize recovery of lost otherness
(Miyamoto, Atsumi, Yamori 2012) of a learner of English as second language
during tutorial sessions. The official purpose of teaching and learning English
announced by MEXT is rearing capable English users for globalization
but there must be other essential purposes for most of learners
in junior high and high schools in Japan as only top level students will
be working globally in their future. The author believes that
one of such purposes is recovery of otherness,
through which acquisition of second language is possible. Talk-in-interactions between a young highfunctioning autistic English learner
and his tutor during tutorial sessions are analyzed.
The trait of pragmatic competence in autism is emergence of inflexibility,
which leads to difficulty in performing perlocutionary acts,
and comparison of chronological data and data between different frames shows
how otherness lost recovers through development of perlocution.
